UC Abusive Conduct in the Workplace FAQs
Why do I have to take this training?
As part of University of California’s (UC) ongoing commitment to creating a safe and healthy working environment, and in support of the five anchors of UC San Diego’s People Proposition, UC has launched a required system-wide training on Abusive Conduct in the Workplace in alignment with President Michael Drake’s policy effective January of 2023.
We hope that no one on campus ever experiences any form of abusive conduct, but we want to ensure that everyone has an understanding of the policy, and is aware of resources available to them should the need arise.
This brief but informative training will help us ensure that everyone has reviewed and understood the information.
Who does this policy apply to?
This policy on Abusive Conduct (“policy”) applies to all University employees, unpaid interns, and third parties. The policy applies at all University campuses, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Medical Centers, the Office of the President, and Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Who needs to take this training?
This training is applicable to all UC employees, including health and campus staff, academics and student employees, and therefore the training is required for all these groups.
I have a question about the training. Where can I learn more?
Campus Staff can direct questions to hr@ucsd.edu.
Health Sciences and Health System staff and MSP Physicians can submit a request on the Health Human Resources website, or call 619-543-3200, and select option 5.

Our general guidance is that you review the policy, which includes examples that may be helpful for you if you believe you are experiencing abusive conduct. Here’s a link to the policy.
If you are unsure, we encourage you to file a complaint by calling the UC Whistleblower Hotline (800) 403-4744, or by visiting the UC San Diego Abusive Conduct in the Workplace Submission page.

I completed the training and submitted a claim for what I believe is abusive conduct. What happens next?
Every complaint filed is evaluated individually by the relevant department for your appointment type to determine whether it potentially meets the criteria for abusive conduct under the policy.
If you believe you have experienced abusive conduct at UC San Diego, we encourage you to file so your specific circumstances can be reviewed.
We recognize that people often have many questions about their situation, and we appreciate your patience and understanding that the thorough review of each submission takes time.
If you would like to explore other avenues, we encourage you to call the UC Whistleblower Hotline at (800) 403-4744, or the Office of the Ombuds.
