Site Organization in the CMS

Learn about the benefits of an organized site in the CMS.

When you log in to the CMS, the site structure is shown in the window on the left. It's important to keep your site organized. An organized site helps new content editors navigate your site, and it helps Workplace Technology Services assist you more quickly when you have questions.

Keep page and non-page content separate

Images, files and modules should not be mixed in with the page content of your site.

Your pages are the main content of your site. Images, files, and modules can support this content, but should be kept separate to make the pages easier to work with. Having multiple content types mixed together can make certain processes more difficult, such as reordering pages.

Images, files, and modules should be saved into folders named _images, _files, and _modules, respectively. Use sub-folders to organize this content. Depending on how your site was set up, you may only have one of each of these folders for the entire site (this is the default), or you may have multiple sets of these folders for subsections of your site (as in Blink, for example).

Sometimes the CMS saves a new image or file where you didn't intend it to be saved. If you need to move non-page content to appropriate folders, see the instructions on Moving Assets.

Only keep files you are using

The CMS should not be used to store your old files and images. Delete files and images you aren't using.

Having extra files and images clutters the site for site editors.

It also makes your site publish more slowly when you publish your entire site. You may need to publish your site to update your top navigation, or WTS may need to publish your site to roll out a feature or bug fix.

Publishing the entire site may also publish files that you don't want to be live anymore. While you may not be linking to them, they can still get published and turn up in search results. Make sure only your most up-to-date content can be published by regularly deleting old files and images from the CMS.
