Layoff/RIT can be caused by lack of funding, lack of work, or department reorganization. The term "layoff" includes "reduction in time." For details on these terms, please see Types of Layoff.
If layoff or reduction in time (RIT) becomes a necessity in your department, it can be a difficult time for you, affected employees, and remaining employees. The information below can serve as a guide to help you navigate the layoff as smoothly as possible for all concerned.
As soon as you determine that layoff/RIT action is necessary, contact Employee Relations, (858) 534-4115, to obtain a representative who will work with you throughout the process.
Department responsibilities
Your department has specific responsibilities in a layoff/RIT situation:
- Determine the need for layoff/RIT for employees in career positions.
- Determine the job classifications affected.
- Coordinate all actions with Employee Relations, so you can:
- Correctly complete the proposal package, making the process as smooth as possible for all concerned.
- Deliver the notification letter to the employee as soon as possible.
