Find out about the different types of layoffs and reductions in time at UCSD.
The term "layoff" at UCSD applies to career positions only and includes two types of layoffs:
- Reduction in time (RIT): A career employee's appointment percentage is reduced.
- Layoff: A career employee's position is eliminated.
- In a temporary layoff/RIT:
- Only career employees are affected.
- The layoff/RIT period is less than four calendar months (120 days).
- The employee receives a written notice stating the effective date and expected duration.
- When possible, the written notice is issued at least 15 days before the effective date. (This time period varies by PPSM and/or collective bargaining agreements.
- Preferential rehire rights do not apply.
- In an indefinite layoff/RIT:
- Only career employees are affected.
- The layoff/RIT period is more than four calendar months (120 days).
- The employee has rights to recall, preferential rehire, and/or severance options depending on the applicable policy and/or Collective Bargaining Agreement.
