Employee/Employer Conflict Resolution
Effectively managing workplace challenges is an essential skill that helps create a positive and supportive work environment for student employees. The Student Employment Office (SEO) encourages departments to approach student employment as a learning experience that fosters professional growth and long-term success. When conflicts arise, supervisors should use the following structured approach to address concerns constructively and guide student employees toward resolution:
Step-by-Step Conflict Resolution Approach
-
Initiate a Private Discussion – Speak with the student employee promptly and privately to understand their perspective and gather details about the issue. Maintain a calm and professional tone to encourage open dialogue.
-
Clarify Expectations – Reference the department policies, job description, or workplace expectations to provide clear guidance on performance or behavior concerns. Ensure the student understands how their role aligns with workplace standards.
-
Identify Solutions & Provide Support – Collaborate with the student to determine actionable steps for improvement. If needed, refer them to relevant campus resources such as Advising, Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), or SEO for additional support.
-
Follow Up & Offer Feedback – Check in with the student at a later time to review progress and provide constructive feedback. Reinforce positive changes and address any remaining challenges.
-
Document the Process – Keep a record of all discussions, agreed-upon steps, and follow-ups. Proper documentation ensures accountability and provides a reference if further action is required.
-
Consult SEO for Additional Guidance – If the conflict persists or escalates, reach out to the Student Employment Office for additional strategies, mediation support, or policy clarification. While casual-restricted student employees may be terminated without cause, we recommend consulting with our team before moving to dismissal.
By following these guidelines, student-employee supervisors can help resolve conflicts effectively while fostering a supportive and developmental workplace experience. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the Student Employment Office.
