Notice: LastPass Security Incident and Steps You Should Take

In late December 2022, we were notified of a serious security incident involving LastPass, which UC San Diego uses as its password manager of choice. In short, a hacker was able to obtain the full, encrypted vaults for many or all of its customers. Along with other LastPass customers, we’re still working on understanding the full scope of the breach and the implications.

As announced in our October 17 campus notice , UC San Diego has recently experienced an increase in phishing attacks that seek to exploit the phone callback option for two-step login (provided by Duo Security). To reduce the possibility of further incidents, the callback option for Duo two-step login will be progressively retired between November 2022 and March 2023 for all UC San Diego students, academic employees, and staff, including UC San Diego Health personnel .

Log4J Vulnerability Response and Actions Needed

Last week a new and pervasive vulnerability was announced in a commonly used component of the Java programming framework. The “Log4J” vulnerability allows a hacker to easily gain remote access to vulnerable computers. UC San Diego has seen thousands of attacks against networked computers since the announcement, and our IT professionals have been working since last week to identify and secure vulnerable computers and services.
