      Coming Soon: Use a Personal Email Address to Reset Forgotten AD Password

      Next month, we’ll be introducing a new method to reset your employee Active Directory (AD) password if you have forgotten it. Effective May 9, 2023, if you have entered a personal, non-ucsd e-mail address in UCPath, you may use the password management portal password.ucsd.edu to have a reset link sent to this personal account.

      Resumption of Phone Callback Retirements for Duo Two-Step Login

      On January 17, 2023, UC San Diego will continue the process of progressively retiring the phone callback option for Duo two-step login. The following users will have the phone callback option retired on January 17: students with last names beginning A-G who received a Duo phone call in the six months leading up to November 2022.

      Campuswide Expansion of Simulated Phishing Campaigns

      As part of our ongoing cybersecurity educational campaigns, for several years IT Services has conducted “mock phishing” email campaigns to VC-CFO staff. We feel these efforts have improved awareness on spotting the telltale characteristics of phishing emails and how to report them.

      LastPass Security Incident and Steps You Should Take

      In late December 2022, we were notified of a serious security incident involving LastPass, which UC San Diego uses as its password manager of choice. In short, a hacker was able to obtain the full, encrypted vaults for many or all of its customers. Along with other LastPass customers, we’re still working on understanding the full scope of the breach and the implications.

      Retirement of Phone Callback Option from Duo Two-Step Login

      As announced in our October 17 campus notice, UC San Diego has recently experienced an increase in phishing attacks that seek to exploit the phone callback option for two-step login (provided by Duo Security). To reduce the possibility of further incidents, the callback option for Duo two-step login will be progressively retired between November 2022 and March 2023 for all UC San Diego students, academic employees, and staff, including UC San Diego Health personnel.

      UC San Diego has recently experienced an increase in phishing attacks that seek to exploit the phone callback option provided by Duo Security, which UC San Diego uses to power its two-step login process (also known as multi-factor authentication or MFA).

      10x Increase in Sexploitation Scams

      Over the last month, UC San Diego has experienced a 10-fold increase in what are known as “sexploitation” scams. These are email messages, claiming that the sender has taken control of the recipient's computer and, unless a payment is received, threatens to release videos and other images of the recipient.

      URGENT SECURITY UPDATE: VPN Now Required to Use Remote Desktop Protocols (ADP/RDP/VNC)

      As part of UC San Diego’s continuous effort to protect our community from ransomware attacks, effective  March 1, 2022, remote access to campus resources using the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Apple Remote Desktop (ADP), and Virtual Network Computing (VNC) will now require connection to the campus VPN.

      Log4J Vulnerability Response and Actions Needed

      Last week a new and pervasive vulnerability was announced in a commonly used component of the Java programming framework. The “Log4J” vulnerability allows a hacker to easily gain remote access to vulnerable computers. UC San Diego has seen thousands of attacks against networked computers since the announcement, and our IT professionals have been working since last week to identify and secure vulnerable computers and services.
