Celebrating Our Student Staff
One of the exciting things about working at IT Services is sharing the workload with some of the most incredible minds. And some of those minds are ones we help shape, namely our student employees. Ensuring their success at the UC San Diego involves mentorship and means supporting their first few steps in their desired career. So let's take a moment to celebrate our student staff members.

One of the exciting things about working at IT Services is sharing the workload with some of the most incredible minds. And some of those minds are ones we help shape, namely our student employees. Ensuring their success at the UC San Diego involves mentorship and means supporting their first few steps in their desired career. So let's take a moment to celebrate our student staff members.
IT Services student staff fill many roles in the organization and in many of them are essential in the delivery of our services to the campus community. IT Services proudly employs about 95 students in our department, a number which accounts for nearly 18% of our workforce. This is a number that is expected to increase over the next year. By supporting the use of student staff through our department, this is our opportunity to get in on the ground floor and introduce them to a potential career.
"Our student staff connect us to the mission of the University, providing a different perspective that we might otherwise not get," said IT Business Office Director Sheryl Gerbracht. "These varied perspectives make the services we deliver much better. Moreover, IT Services has a number of career staff and managers that started as IT Services students. We want to see many more of them join our ranks and see a career at UC San Diego as a viable option for them. No matter where they go for a career, we hope they value the experience gained and friendships made while at IT Services."
Echoing this sentiment, Application Development Director Alex Wu, who currently manages 6 students within the Mobile App team, had this to say:
"This is an amazing opportunity for students to gain real-world experience and explore potential careers. In return, they bring their perspectives and energy into our teams and help IT Services deliver services to campus. On my team, students worked closely with staff- and with urgency- to implement the COVID test kit scanning feature in the campus mobile app - one of the key components of Return to Learn. It's been a rewarding experience collaborating with our students and we truly appreciate all their contributions."
It's safe to say, when it comes to our student staff, we could not do what we do without them! And in recognition of National Student Employment Week and all their hard work, the Senior Management Team will be giving all IT Services Student workers a $20 Make a Difference gift card! So to all of our student staff members you are appreciated. We see your passion, your contributions and we are proud to share in your journey within IT.
