Barbara E. Stewart
Management Services Officer III
Department of Sociology
Years of service at UCSD: 30
Barbara Ellison Stewart died peacefully at her home June 26, 2005. She was born in Grantsville, W.Va., in 1946 and earned her B.S. in economics from UCSD.
Barbara's career at UCSD began over 35 years ago in the Payroll Office, followed by positions at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and in the Physics Department and the Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Science. She left UCSD briefly in the early 1980s and returned in 1986 to join the Department of Sociology.
Barbara's peers honored her with the 2005 Betsy Faught Award (PDF), which recognizes excellence and outstanding achievement in the management of general campus units. In addition, the Sociology Department dedicated a room in the Social Sciences Building as the Barbara E. Stewart Seminar Room.
"She had grace, knowledge, poise, an extraordinary ability to deal with people, and a remarkable dedication to the department and the institution. Barbara is someone I feel privileged to have known," said Andrew Scull, professor of sociology and Barbara's supervisor.
