Mary Gomes passed away on December 23, 2015.
Mary was born on October 25, 1948 in Escondido, California, but her heart belonged to Hawaii. When she was 20 years old, with $100 in her pocket, she bought a one-way ticket to Maui. She lived there for 12 years until her son, Chris, was born. She loved life of the islands. It was her hope to return to Hawaii in retirement. Mary returned to San Diego to raise Chris, sometimes working three jobs. She has always been a very hard worker and tried to provide the best life possible for her son.
Mary often spent her weekends with her four grandchildren. She planned exciting excursions to the beach, rock climbing, swimming, hiking or going to a movie. Watching her grandkids develop and grow was her biggest pleasure. Mary was also a supportive, loving friend. She put herself out to help others.
At work, Mary cared deeply about her staff. She encouraged them to strive for their goals and gave a helping hand in any way that she could. Her guidance and support will be missed. She was constantly pushing herself to develop her own skills and always strove to make her area efficient and effective. She provided excellent customer service to the faculty and staff of UCSD, responding to requests in a professional and timely manner.
Mary is survived by her son, Chris, her daughter-in-law, Andrea, four grandchildren, and her sisters Paulette and Sheryll.
