Staff in Memoriam: Jorge Rios
Jorge Rios
Senior Personnel Analyst
Equal Opportunity/ Staff Affirmative Action
Years of service at UCSD: 14
Jorge Rios, a great supporter of UCSD's staff associations, passed away suddenly on March 27, 2010. He assisted the associations with program planning and was one of the founders of the Veterans Association at UCSD.
He was named a Veteran of the Year in a countywide recognition program and was vice chair of the Chicano/ Latino Staff Association.
Jorge oversaw 2 major components of UCSD's Career Connection Program: the career development workshops and mentoring for staff. He also provided conciliation services, designed and presented diversity workshops, and worked with managers to devise strategies for dealing with diversity-related matters.
According to his colleagues, Jorge was always looking for ways to promote EO/SAA services and ensure that everyone was treated fairly in the workplace.
Over the years, Jorge served on many campus committees and in the local community. His service included the California Equal Rights Professionals annual conference planning committee and co-chairing the UC Diversity Trainers Group.
Family was very important to Jorge. He is survived by his wife Susan and 2 sons, Andres and Mario, a grandson, and other family members.
A staunch Oakland Raiders fan, Jorge often wore the team colors to remind his co-workers of his loyalty. "Eventually, we all became more tolerant, even the Chargers fans," noted his colleagues, adding, "So perhaps this was a learning opportunity delivered by Jorge."
"Jorge Rios was a consummate networker and valued team member. Although he will be missed, he has left a legacy of fairness and inclusion that will continue in the hearts and actions of many."
Donations are requested in his memory to the Jorge Rios CLSA (Chicano/ Latino Staff Association) Scholarship Fund. Contributions should be sent to the UC San Diego Foundation at Mail Code 0940 with checks made out to the UCSD Foundation, referencing the Jorge Rios CLSA Scholarship Fund.
