System Status:

UC San Diego provides paid time off for vacation to employees, depending on eligibility.

Employees accrue a specific amount of vacation (PDF) each month based on type of appointment, years of qualifying service, and number of working hours per month.

Full-time Professional and Support Staff accrue vacation leave as follows:

  • Less than 10 years of service: approximately 15 working days a year
  • 10-15 years of service: approximately 18 working days a year
  • 15-20 years of service: approximately 21 working days a year
  • 20 or more years of service: approximately 24 working days a year

Full-time SMG members and Managers and Senior Professionals accrue vacation leave as follows:

  • Less than 5 years of service: approximately 18 working days a year
  • 5-10 years of service: approximately 21 working days a year
  • 10 or more years of service: approximately 24 working days a year

Eligible employees accrue vacation for all hours on pay status.

Maximum accrual

Employees cease to accrue vacation time when they reach a maximum balance, which is twice the amount of vacation a full-time employee earns each year (based on longevity of service).

  • 15 working days per year: 240 hours
  • 18 working days per year: 288 hours
  • 21 working days per year: 336 hours
  • 24 working days per year: 384 hours

Note: For policy-covered staff, due to COVID-19, President Napolitano approved a temporary increase of the four-month extension for eligible staff, effective retroactively from June 1 through Dec. 31, 2020. During this period, policy-covered employees will not lose time and a PPSM 2.210 Vacation Leave Accrual Exception Request is not required. For more information, see UCnet.

Employees must request supervisory approval to schedule and use vacation time. Some categories of employees not represented by collective bargaining agreements may use vacation immediately. Other staff employees are eligible after completing 6 months of qualifying service. All employees may use only vacation time that has been accrued, i.e., although employees may be eligible to accrue 15 working days a year, they may use only the hours that have already been accrued during that year.
