Purpose
California Workers' Compensation (WC) laws require UC San Diego to provide workers' compensation benefits to employees who are injured or who develop an illness as a direct result of their employment. These laws determine who is eligible, when benefits begin, and what benefits to provide.
Eligibility
Eligibility for Workers' Compensation benefits according to California Labor Code:
- All persons serving the university as employees may qualify for workers' compensation coverage through UC San Diego. Students (other than student employees) and employees of outside agencies do not qualify, even though the claimed injury may have occurred at UC San Diego.
- An employer's liability for the provision of workers' compensation benefits exists for any injury arising out of and in the course of employment.
If you are not a campus employee, see Student Health Services.
Coverage
If you have a work-related injury or illness, WC pays your medical bills and provides compensation to help replace your lost income until you can return to work. Potential benefits include:
- Medical care to cure or relieve the effects of the industrial injury
- Temporary disability payments to help replace lost wages
- Permanent disability payments to compensate for a permanent disability
- Supplemental job displacement voucher if you are unable to return to work
- Death benefit payments to dependents
Procedures

Transitional Return to Work Program (TRTW)
TRTW returns employees to work following an occupational injury or illness as soon as possible. TRTW assignments allow employees with temporary, partial disabilities to transition back to work in a modified, alternative, or reduced-hours capacity for a defined period of time.
