Use the My Research Safety Web portal to manage your Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) audits, inventories, and authorizations online.
- Go to My Research Safety: myresearchsafety.ucsd.edu
Note: You must have a UC San Diego Business Systems (sometimes referred to as Single Sign-On) username and password to access applications on the My Research Safety Web portal.
- See How to Get Access to UC San Diego Business Systems for simple instructions. Contact your department security administrator (DSA) if you need assistance.
Access for new principal investigators
New principal investigators must be entered in the EH&S database to enable certain research safety authorizations and to access EH&S online applications.
- Use the Principal Investigator Information Form to be entered into the EH&S database or to report information changes.
Authorizations for principal investigators and authorized lab contacts
Use My Research Safety to access these online applications:
- My EH&S Profile (only available to PI and EH&S Lab Contacts) – Identify your lab personnel, contacts and locations; view safety authorizations and lab audits. All laboratory or technical locations where research is conducted, materials are stored, and equipment is used, need to be listed on My Research Safety.
- All lab personnel must have a current emergency/cell phone number on file so they may be contacted in case of emergency and to comply with departmental research continuity plans.
- Authorizations – Apply for and manage research authorizations and hazard control plans for regulated and high-hazard materials. Current online authorizations and hazard control plan applications are listed below. Other authorizations with EH&S oversight will be added in the future.
- Biohazard Use Authorization (BUA) – Obtain a Biohazard Use Authorization (BUA) when planning to use (in research or teaching) regulated biological materials such as recombinant DNA and infectious agents (human, animal, plant pathogens, including work with bloodborne pathogens).
- Controlled Substance Use Authorization (CSUA) – Obtain a CSUA to possess and use CS for research, teaching, or veterinary care.
- Laser Use Authorization (LUA) – Obtain an LUA when working with class 3B or 4 lasers or laser systems.
- Radioisotope Use Authorization (RUA) – Obtain a Radioisotope Use Authorization (RUA) to possess and use radioactive materials for research.
- Machine Use Authorization (MUA) – Principal Investigators who acquire or fabricate a radiation-producing machine must notify Environment, Health & Safety within 30 days of acquisition and prior to putting the machine into service.
- See Research Safety Authorizations for Principal Investigators for information about other authorizations required for research with regulated materials and subjects at UC San Diego.
- Hazard Control Plan (HCP) – Generate hazard control plans for work with high-hazard chemicals.
-
- Note: At UC San Diego, a hazard control plan is a standard operating procedure (SOP).
-
- Laboratory Hazard Assessment Tool (LHAT) – Identify hazards and the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be used during the specified work activities. A completed Laboratory Hazard Assessment provides a summary report of hazards present in the lab and specifies PPE required for workers.
- Inventories – View and export your inventory data for chemicals, radioisotopes, and controlled substances.
- Chemcycle – Obtain free chemicals and donate usable surplus inventory through the UC San Diego chemical reuse program.
- Online Waste Tag Program (OTP) – Use the UC San Diego automated waste tracking and tag generation program for almost every hazardous waste produced on campus.
- Radiation Risk Calculator – Generate a radiation exposure risk statement and category for human research protocols.
- Training Analytics – Review training history and find out what training needed for laboratory compliance.
Department Safety Officers (DSOs)
Use the My Research Safety Department Safety Officer tools to monitor:
- Chemical inventories – View and export chemical inventory details by building.
- Control area coverage – View and export uniform fire code summaries and details by building.
- Safety audits – View lab safety audits by department.
- Display Reports – Generate Lab Safety Action Item Summary and PI Profile Reports
- Radiation Risk Calculator – Generate a radiation exposure risk statement and category for human research protocols.
