Does my equipment have a battery?
If you are unsure if your equipment contains batteries, see how it is powered. Is it rechargeable? Then the equipment likely contains a battery. Note: if your equipment has a power cord, but still has power without it plugged in, then it most likely has a battery. In most circumstances, even small button cell type batteries are still regulated.
Some examples of regulated hazardous material batteries include:
- Lithium ion
- Lithium metal
- Lead acid
- Alkaline
- Nickel cadmium
Warning: Failure to comply with international and federal transportation regulations when shipping hazardous materials can result in civil penalties of $96,624 per occurrence, and criminal penalties may include up to 10 years of imprisonment in addition (49CFR 107.329-107.333).
Are my batteries hazardous?
All batteries and battery powered equipment are regulated by the DOT/FAA to some extent when being packed, shipped, and transported domestically and internationally.
Are all Lithium Batteries hazardous?
Yes, both rechargeable and disposable batteries are considered hazardous and require shippers to follow specific rules and precautions to be transported. Improperly packed and shipped batteries may become combustible if damaged, leading to short-circuiting, fire, or explosion. Lithium battery fires are occurring more and more frequently in both business and personal settings, often as a direct result of improper packing or disposal, making them one of the most highly regulated dangerous goods. This also means that the regulations for packing and shipping lithium batteries change yearly, making it vital to keep shipments compliant with the most recent laws.
Can I ship my own batteries?
Only those legally trained and certified in accordance with the 49CFR/IATA regulations can package and ship batteries in commerce for UCSD business and research. Note: this training must be current.
