When is coaching right for me?
Any staff or faculty member can leverage the coaching programs, including those who are individual contributors or in supervisor/people leadership roles. Coaching is well suited for any role in the organization, and past coaching participants include vice chancellors, associate vice chancellors, deans, directors, managers, coordinators, analysts, specialists, etc.
My role
While a coach uses various tools, techniques, and models to facilitate growth and development, you are responsible for your progress. The collaborative nature of a coaching partnership is enhanced when you are ready to prioritize and invest in your personal and professional development, which includes but is not limited to:
- having a desire to increase self awareness
- willingness to confront challenges openly and honestly
- being prepared to take an active role in each coaching session
- prioritizing the energy and time needed to work toward achieving your personal development goals
My supervisor’s role
In alignment with the university’s commitment to fostering a culture of feedback we recommend before beginning coaching that you and your supervisor/people leader discuss coaching as a professional development opportunity. While the coaching sessions are confidential between you and your coach, there are distinct opportunities for your supervisor to be involved to support your development: 1) in the initial goal setting portion of the coaching process to ensure clarity and buy-in across all involved parties, and 2) at post-engagement planning to confirm actions that will sustain progress.
Who are the coaches?
The coaches are seasoned experts who are ready to partner with you! Each coach is external to UC San Diego and a professional coach with higher education experience and advanced training. They regularly provide coaching and consulting services to clients, and have areas of expertise and specialty that align with the general Campus community’s areas of interest and priority.
