Once I complete the certificate, what else is available for professional development in the people management area?

Our first suggestion is to work with your manager to develop or further develop some of the skills you learned in the certificate program. You need to experiment to continue your growth as a professional. So, pick an area, put it to work and then evaluate your efforts. You can use an Individual Development Plan (IDP) to organize your ideas into a cohesive plan that starts with short-term goals and moves to mid-range and long-term goals.

Moreover, if you are a formally designated supervisor/manager, completing the UC People Management Series and Certificate based on the 2018 requirements (which includes the Managing Implicit Bias series) will make you eligible to attend the UC People Management Conference generally held annually by the University of California.

Note: For individuals who completed the UCPM prior to the requirement changes in 2018, you are highly encouraged to complete the UC Managing Implicit Bias series, which are the six additional core requirements. Upon completion, you will receive the UC Managing Implicit Bias Certificate and a new 2018 People Management Series and Certificate, allowing those who are formally designated supervisors/managers to be eligible to attend the UC People Management Conference held later this year.

Why was the UC Managing Implicit Bias series included as a requirement in UCPM?

As a UC People Manager, being aware of implicit bias and how it impacts the way we work and interact with others is especially important. Therefore, the University of California launched the UC Managing Implicit Bias Series to help increase awareness of implicit bias, reduce its impact at the University, and further reinforce the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What is the UC People Management Conference?

The UC People Management Conference started in 2017. It is a three-day conference filled with learning, collaboration, and connecting people leaders across the UC system. Each day is comprised of various sessions that address various topics led by speakers/facilitators. By attending the conference, you’ll hear from inspiring speakers, learn from peers and industry experts, and stay current with people management trends.

To be eligible for the conference, participants must have completed one of the following programs in order to attend:

  • UC People Management Series and Certificate*
  • UC Management Development Program
  • UC-CORO Systemwide Leadership Collaborative
*Note: Those who have completed the UC People Management Series and Certificate must have received the electronic certificate titled “UC Systemwide People Management Series and Certificate”. At the bottom of your certificate, it should indicate that you completed the 2018 UC People Management Series and Certificate and related coursework in the areas of Performance Management, Managing Implicit Bias, Managing People, Administration & Operations, Change Management, and Communications. Eligibility to the conference via the UCPM certificate also requires that you are a formally designated supervisor/manager.

Why should I invest the time to complete this certificate? Will it benefit my career in any way?

Being open to learning new concepts and new approaches is one of the keys to success in any career path. By investing time to complete the certificate, you will be exposed to new ways of managing people. If you work on further developing these skills and ask for feedback on how you are doing as a people manager, then you are almost certain to grow professionally. You will also be able to put this certificate on your resume, LinkedIn profile, etc. which shows that you are committed to developing your people management skills. The certificate shows dedication to want to learn and grow as a people manager, helping to build your credibility as a leader since the UCPM is recognized across the entire UC system.

Does UCPM qualify for CEUs?

The courses for UCPM are not associated with continuing education units (CEUs).

How will I receive my UC People Management Series and Certificate?

Once you have completed the Core and Elective Course requirements, you will receive an auto-notification indicating you are complete. The UC Learning Center will automatically adjust your permanent learning record and you will be able to view, download, and/or print it from the Transcripts & Certificates icon on your UC Learning Center home page.

What if there are no scheduled dates for a class?

If an ILT class is not appearing in the UC Learning Center, then it is pending scheduling. You can use the Express Interest function on the UC Learning Center to indicate that you'd like to be notified when a class gets scheduled; this will be a button beside link just below the class name, which will show after you have clicked the Register button and seen that there are no dates available.

What are the costs involved?

There is no cost to staff to complete the eCourses. If there is a charge for an ILT class, it will be listed in the course description.

I have already completed some of the courses required for the certificate. Can I get credit for them?

Yes, credit will be given for any course completed in January 2011 or later. We believe a 5-year “look back” is reasonable. Going back any further is not recommended as we continually update our course material due to the changing nature of the workforce and the evolution of employment policies. During the time of the UCPM Certificate launch in January 2017, those who were grandfathered in for qualifying equivalencies were notified by Staff Education and Development or Health Human Resources.

What are the equivalencies?

These are courses that, if taken, qualify for the UC People Management Series and Certificate. If you have taken one or more equivalent courses from January 2011 on, you will automatically be granted credit. During the time of the UCPM Certificate launch in January 2017, those who were grandfathered in for qualifying equivalencies were notified by Staff Education and Development or Health Human Resources.

I am not currently a people manager but aspire to this role at some point in my career. Am I eligible to earn the certificate?

Yes, earning the certificate will give you insights into what the role entails, and helps you determine if being a people manager is the right fit for you. The only restriction is that you will not be able to enroll in classes specifically designed for individuals who are already in a supervisory role.
