Staff Learning and Development is working on new resources to help UC San Diego staff prepare for the supervisory role. In the meantime, we encourage any staff interested in exploring a supervisory role to request a consultation.

We encourage any staff interested in exploring a supervisory role to request a consultation with a member of the Staff Learning and Development by emailing staffeducation@ucsd.edu.

Purpose: Connect with a member of the SED team to learn more about supervisory/managerial resources and connect to important training opportunities.

Supervisors’ HR Toolkit

This toolkit includes resources and information put together by your Campus HR Partners and includes key topics you should know as a supervisor at UC San Diego. Topics include: prevention of harrassment and discrimination, supporting your teams, safety training, hiring, being a responsible employee, confidentiality, and the Faculty Staff Assistance Program.

Purpose: Access these resources the moment you become a supervisor within the UC San Diego Campus community.

Supervising @UCSD​

This orientation provides an overview of the most important do’s and don'ts of supervising at UC San Diego, emphasizing best practices, recognizing areas that may implicate laws and regulations, and connecting with resources to help navigate supervisory challenges.

Purpose: This is recommended as the first course for Campus supervisors/managers who are new to supervising at the university.

Delivery Method: Live online


Survey Course (Supervisory Training Laboratory)​

The Supervisory Training Laboratory (Sup Lab) cohort will engage in self and team assessment activities, case study examinations, and small group projects to explore supervisory skills and strategies.

Purpose: This course is recommended for those who are within the first few years (up to 2 years) of the supervisor/manager role. It is recommended to complete “Supervising at UC San Diego” first, followed by “Supervisory Training Laboratory.”

Core Courses

Log in to the UC Learning Center to review the offerings and enroll in these courses: 

  • Building Inclusive Teams Trust
  • Team Building: Setting Norms, Goals, and Expectations
  • Collaboration and Communication Tools for Teams.

Purpose: The three core courses are to be completed after “S@UCSD” and can be taken in any order. The courses are tailored for new supervisors/managers and can be helpful for experienced supervisors/managers who want to refresh their supervisory toolkit.

Lifecycle Series

These are supervisor/manager-specific trainings hosted by Campus Human Resources and HR Partners.

Purpose: The lifecycle courses provide a deeper exploration into specific subject areas and are facilitated by experts in the respective fields.

Toolkit for Team Building

The Toolkit for Team Building includes instructions and resources for you to select and facilitate an activity with your team. Assess your team’s needs and build rapport with your team via self-serve activities.

Purpose: The Toolkit for Team Building provides a structure and affiliated activities for  supervisors/managers to encourage open communication and the active inclusion of all voices.

Delivery Method: On-demand online


UC People Management Certificate

The UC People Management Series and Certificate is for anyone who currently manages or supervises people or aspires to manage people and includes topics such as: performance management, implicit bias, change management, and communications.

Purpose: The certificate coursework is designed to increase people management capabilities at UC San Diego as well as across the entire UC system.

Delivery Method: On-demand online

Subway Stop 3: Grow your supervisory skillset with the university.

Have a few years of supervising experience at the university and wanting to grow your supervisory skillset?

Deepen supervisory competencies via development planning and participating in programs for emerging leaders. Regardless of your supervising experience, experienced supervisors may find value in attending Supervising at UC San Diego, any of the three Core Courses, and any of the Lifecycle classes as listed in subway stop 2.  These courses are considered foundational resources for exploring and understanding the policies, procedures, and culture of supervision at UC San Diego.

STRIVE​ Leadership

The multi-year program catalyzes innovation, emphasizes performance, focuses on effectiveness and solutions, expands situational influence, explores the unknowns and moves participants beyond their comfort zone. Applications are accepted once per year.

Purpose: STRIVE is a mentoring and leadership program supporting the mission of higher education through intentional employee development.

Delivery Method: Live online and in-person


UC Women's Initiative​

The UC Women’s Initiative (UC WI) is a systemwide professional development program designed to help woman-identified professionals advance in their UC careers. Applications are accepted once per year.

Purpose: The program is committed to enabling the full participation, success, and advancement of woman-identified professionals at the University, and all who support this mission are invited to apply.

Delivery Method: Live online


Management Skills Assessment Program

The Management Skills Assessment Program (MSAP) is designed to strengthen the engagement and preparation of current and potential UC supervisors, managers, and professionals. It offers an intensive, off-site, assessment center experience for early career managers.  

Applications for this twice annual program are accepted once per year.

Purpose: The learning and accountability continues after the program through collaborative work between the assessee participant and their sponsoring manager to fine tune a professional development plan designed to optimize assessment feedback.

Delivery Method: In-person training
