Who can participate/register in the Staff Mentorship Program?
UC San Diego employees who register with the Career Connection program may participate in the Staff Mentorship Program by applying at mentorship.ucsd.edu with their Business Systems or Active Directory account.
How do I become a mentor/mentee?
Register and complete your application on the Mentorship Program Website.
Note that applications that are not fully completed by the deadline for each matching period will not be matched in the current session and will be deleted.
What happens if I try apply outside of the application period for that session?
For each matching session, there is a specific application period with a deadline. You will not be able to register once the application period ends. When more mentees than mentors have applied, the deadline for mentor applications may be different than for mentees.
What are the benefits of participation in the Staff Mentorship Program?
UC San Diego staff members who participate as mentees benefit from advising, guidance and coaching from a mentor as well as formal and informal networking opportunities.
UC San Diego staff members (and retirees) who participate as mentors benefit from mentor training and other resource information about career development programs. Mentors gain personal contacts throughout the University by attending Career Connection events and develop an effective credential package for their desired job or career. Mentors are recognized by name in a letter sent to their Vice Chancellor.
What is the commitment for mentors/mentees?
Mentors and mentees are required to meet once a month, for about an hour, over a period of approximately six months.
Are there any requirements to be a mentee?
Any UC San Diego staff member can become a mentee in this program. During the course of the program, mentees are required to take four out of the six Career Connection Core workshops (PDF) and complete their Individual Development Plan to share with their mentor. Mentees must be willing to accept constructive feedback from their mentors related to their resume, career goals and objectives and commit themselves to continuous growth and improvement in work skills and values in order to increase their quality of life.
Are there any requirements to be a mentor?
Mentors should be seasoned UC San Diego staff members who can commit to at least a one hour meeting every month for six months with a fellow UC San Diego employee. Mentors find themselves acting as guides, demonstrators of new skills, and a coach reinforcing positive accomplishments. Mentors agree to provide feedback on the mentee’s Individual Development Plan goals and objectives. Mentors should be professional and straightforward at all times and are asked to keep all personal and work discussions confidential.
One of the most significant contributions a mentor can make is to help the mentee develop career goals and to move toward the realization of these goals. Mentors should be honest, committed, respectful of their mentees, and willing to share themselves. Effective evaluation is a significant trait of a good mentoring relationship.
What guidance is provided for mentors and mentees?
The Staff Mentorship Program Coordinator will match mentors and mentees to most closely fit the mentee’s occupational goals and objectives. Mentors and mentees are provided with a Staff Mentorship Program Guidebook, which includes a mentorship program contract, instructions, guidelines, and the Individual Development Plan to be completed by the mentee. There is a Kickoff at the beginning of each matching session that both mentors and mentees are required to attend, and a mid-session Mixers is offered to participants. Consultations are available for mentors regarding their mentee or program issues; and recognition of the mentors to their respective Vice Chancellor is coordinated by Career Connection for each year of participation.
When will I be matched with my mentor/mentee?
Matches are made annually in the fall. Application deadlines will be posted on the Staff Mentorship Program's Blink page for each upcoming session.
How will I be matched?
Mentees and Mentors are matched based on preferred background and experiences listed in their registration profiles. In some cases, when exact interests cannot be matched, mentors and mentees are matched based on length of service at the University and the variety of home department and Vice Chancellor areas represented.
Once I am matched, what happens next?
Once matched, participants are asked to read the Staff Mentorship Program Guidebook, which can be downloaded via the Mentorship Program Website. Instructions for both mentors and mentees can be found in the guidebook, along with a mentorship program contract.
There is a Kickoff at the beginning of each matching session that both mentors and mentees are required to attend.
Can I be a mentor and a mentee during the same session?
Yes, a person can participate as both a mentor and a mentee during the same session.
Mentees are encouraged to help others by participating as a mentor in the future. The “graduation” of mentees to mentors permits this program to continue to help other aspiring UC San Diego employees by meeting the ever-growing demand for mentors.
What happens at the end of the six month program? Can I continue my mentorship relationship?
At the end of the “official” 6 month mentorship session, if you and your mentor/mentee wish to continue your mentoring relationship, we encourage you to do so. Mentorship is rewarding in any setting and at any time. Mentorship relationships are not tracked beyond the 6 months, but our office is available to provide support if needed.
Can I participate in the Staff Mentorship Program more than once as a mentor or a mentee?
Yes, both mentors and mentees can participate in the program multiple times in multiple roles. So a person can register to be a mentee more than once, and then later register as a mentor. Mentors can participate as many times as they desire.
