Election of Officers
There are eight elected IDEAS Council positions as outlined below.
Any individual interested in holding one of the eight elected positions should submit his or her name and desired position via email to ideascouncil@ucsd.edu by the date specified by the Chair. The Chair will then email the proposed slate out to the membership for approval.
In the event more than one name is submitted for a position, a vote will be put forth to membership via email by the Council Chair and members will have two weeks to vote on the candidates. Winners will be notified by the Council Chair and the new leadership will be announced to the membership via email.
Council Chair
The IDEAS Council is led by the UC San Diego Startup Advocate who is based in the the Office of Innovation and Commercialization.
- Acting as liaison to the Council of Innovation Leadership
- Managing annual budget through the Office of Innovation and Commercialization
- Leading the UC San Diego Ignite conference
- Setting the Council agenda and leading all Council meetings
Council Vice Chair
The IDEAS Council Vice Chair works closely with the chair to lead the IDEAS Council and ensure that initiatives move forward
- Setting the agenda with the chair
- Being the Acting Chair in the Chair’s absence including overseeing all the responsibilities of the Chair
Communications & Marketing
The IDEAS Council Communication and Marketing Chair is responsible for all strategic coordination of all marketing and communications for the IDEAS Council
- Attending monthly UCSD Marketing Council mtgs. (4th Wed. of every month)
- Acting as IDEAS Council liaison to the UCSD Marketing Committee
- Acting as a liaison with other professional organizations to promote IDEAS Council and develop cross marketing opportunities.
- Attending and lead separate communication meetings with committee volunteers as needed
- Leading the development of communication and outreach strategy that aligns with the overall IDEAS Council strategy
- Developing and lead implementation of communication and outreach plans including messaging in print and social media in collaboration with committee
- Coordinating with IDEAS Council leadership and webmaster to develop and maintain website
- Leading the creation of marketing materials, flyers and brochures and ensure branding and messaging are consistent for cross-campus initiatives such as the campus involvement in Startup Week
- Serving as spokesperson for the IDEAS Council in partnership with the Council Chair
- Promoting public recognition of IDEAS Council as an authoritative resource of entrepreneurial activity on UCSD campus.
Program
- Coordinate with chair and vice chair on setting the agenda for all meetings and schedule speakers as required.
- Responsible for ensuring the programming meets the needs and wants of IDEAS Council mem
- Identify potential internal and external speakers for monthly meetings
- Schedule speakers; provide assistance with logistics including parking and directions
- Lead the planning of any recruiting events in coordination with the membership chair
- Oversee meeting logistics in coordination with council secretary, including the ordering of any food and set up of the room.
Membership
Maintain and initiate process for member solicitation, working with Comm's & Marketing chair on dissemination of information
- Lead among other chairs process for member selection
- Cultivate prospective members by proactively identifying potential members and promoting opportunities to engage prospective members in council activities
- Maintain directory of member contact information
- Assist chairs in identification and cultivation of replacements for impending vacancies in chairs
- Lead the chair recruitment process
- Knowledge of campus best practices and policies that promote diversity and inclusion among chair positions and membership
Secretary
The Secretary is responsible for supporting the work of the Council by securing the location for upcoming Council meetings, developing agendas for upcoming Council meetings in coordination with the Chair, drafting the minutes, and ensuring that whatever documents are created and retained by the Council conform to UC San Diego policies. The Secretary ensures that that copies of the agenda are distributed in advance and that Council members receive the minutes of the previous meeting, along with any other papers or reports relevant to the discussion for the upcoming meeting or were requested from the prior meeting. The Secretary also tracks any action items and provides a reminder to the relevant person if those need to be completed.
- Management of the annual budget and track expenses
Student Outreach
The Student Chair is responsible for serving as a liaison between the IDEAS Council and the general student population. This position may work with the Student Innovation Ambassadors to identify outreach avenues and facilitate extended outreach. The Student Outreach Chair is responsible for:
- Disseminating information from the IDEAS Council to appropriate student organizations, student leaders, and other channels that reach UC San Diego undergraduate and graduate students along with identifying the appropriate groups to contact.
- Developing shared contact lists for relevant student outreach including (but not limited to): resident advisors, academic advisors, leadership of relevant student organizations
- Acting as the IDEAS Council liaison with student organizations
- Serving as a voice of student entrepreneurs by soliciting feedback from the student body and bringing student perspectives to the group
- Lead student engagement in the IDEAS Council to ensure representation and awareness
