Transfer or Ship Radioactive Materials

Learn how to transfer or ship radioisotopes.

Requirement

All transfers and shipments of radioactive materials between UC San Diego principal investigators or from UC San Diego to other destinations, domestic or foreign, must be processed by the EH&S Services Lab.

On campus or UC San Diego medical centers

Use the Intracampus Transfer form to transfer isotopes between:

  • Different UC San Diego principal investigators
  • Campus labs located in different buildings
  • Campus labs and the Medical Center

Note: A transfer form is not required when you share isotopes in common-use areas if:

  • All Radioisotope Use Authorizations (RUAs) involved are authorized for the isotopes
  • Inventory records are maintained

Requirement for transport by motorized vehicle

Regulatory restrictions require that movement of radioactive materials by motorized vehicle be made through the EH&S Services Lab even if inventory ownership does not change.

When isotopes will be moved to a different location on campus or at the Medical Center via motorized vehicle, use the Intracampus Transfer of Radioactive Material form.

Submit an Intracampus Transfer of Radioactive Material form:

  • Print and complete the Transfer of Radioactive Material (Intracampus) form.
  • Mail or fax the form to the EH&S Services Lab: Mail Code: 0035; Fax: (858) 822-5524
  • If the isotopes will be taken off UC San Diego property on public roads arrange for transportation:

Off-campus domestic or foreign destinations

Use the Transfer of Radioactive Material form to transfer isotopes to off-campus domestic or foreign destinations.

Allow sufficient processing time:

  • Domestic shipments, submit form at least 1 week prior to anticipated shipping date
  • Foreign shipments, allow 2 weeks of advance notice

Submit a Transfer of Radioactive Material (Off-Campus) form:

  • Print and complete the top 2 sections of the Transfer of Radioactive Material (Off-Campus) form.
  • Supply the name of and a reliable means of contacting (phone, fax, e-mail address) the Radiation Safety Officer of the entity receiving the transferred radioisotopes.
  • Complete a Shipping Memo form.
  • For transfers from SIO only:
    • Mail or fax the forms and additional information to:
      David Skydel
      Mail Code: 0089
      Fax: (858) 822-7763
For all other UC San Diego transfers:
    • Mail or fax the forms and additional information to:
      EH&S Services Lab
