Checklist for New Academic Advisors

New academic advisors, find a checklist of tasks to complete in your first days.

  1. Get your DSA (Departmental Security Administrator) to set up your Single Sign-On (Business Systems) Access.

  2. Ask your DSA for access to the Staff Portal - this is the main web site that contains applications such as:
    • Virtual Advising System
    • Contact System
    • Sign-in System
    • EDDA Approval System

  3. Complete required training, including the FERPA - Confidentiality of Student Records and Privacy Rights course.

  4. Review the Academic Advisors Handbook available under Documentation section of the Virtual Advising System (login required).

  5. Become familiar with the Advisor Glossary and Reference List in the Advisor Handbook.

  6. Subscribe to relevant list-servs and RSS feeds:
    • Request to join the following listservs by visiting groups.google.com/a/ucsd.edu
      • uaac-l: Undergraduate Academic Advising Council
      • odapa-l: For program/department undergraduate advisors
      • vacucsd-g: Important information related to the Virtual Advising System
    • Bookmark status.ucsd.edu for important information regarding the status of UCSD networks, systems, and tools (e.g. TritonLink enrollment and financial tools, staff look-up and instruction tools, Single Sign-On, etc.), or other technical/ security issues that may affect you.
