PIPER’s data integrations, reporting tools, and user roles work together to give Fund Managers and PIs a clear, up-to-date view of their financial portfolios.
Data Flow Overview

PIPER integrates data from existing UC San Diego systems, such as Oracle, UC Path, Kuali Research, and others. For approximately 10 days each month that the ledger is open, PIPER will update daily with data that is 48 hours old from these systems.
Reports & Features
PIPER includes a robust suite of reports that allow you to drill down into your financial data.Key reports include:
- Portfolio Summary
- Financial Summary (sortable by Inception to Date, Current Budget, and Fiscal Period views)
- Runway Analysis
- Personnel Effort by Position
- Personnel Effort by Project
Key features include:
- Adjustments: Enter “what if” scenarios and model alternate plans.
- Personnel: Review detailed personnel costs and forecasted amounts.
- Combination Chart: A visual chart showing revenue, expenses, and ending balance.
Accessing PIPER
Access to PIPER is currently limited to early onboarding groups through invite-only. Open access is planned for the end of March 2026.

What are the defined roles in PIPER?
The two primary roles are Fund Manager and Principal Investigator (PI).- Fund Managers have full access to the tool to manage financial portfolios, layer projections, and run "what-if" scenarios.
- Principal Investigators have read-only access to the PI Portfolio Summary to review their portfolio's health and runway.
