Who can use PIPER?
All research administrators across UC San Diego — including Academic Affairs, Health Sciences, Marine Sciences (SIO), and Research and Innovation — will have access.
Is PIPER replacing Oracle?
No. PIPER is not a replacement for Oracle. It leverages existing systems (Oracle, UCPath, Kuali) to provide enhanced forecasting and decision-support capabilities.
When can I access PIPER?
The project is currently in an invite-only cohort training phase. Campus-wide rollout is expected in Spring 2026, following successful testing and feedback from early users.
What happens to the BAH reports I use today?
The project team is aware that some BAH reports will be retired as PIPER serves the same purpose. We are working with the governance group to create a clear strategy for BAH report deprecation after the PIPER launch.
Does PIPER calculate things like IDC automatically?
When you enter direct salary, benefits, and ancillary costs, IDC is auto-calculated.
What are the main reports in PIPER?
- Portfolio Summary: Overview of a PI’s full portfolio (resources, costs, balances)
- PI Runway Analysis: A rolling 24-month forecast of fund balances.
- Personnel by Position / Project: Payroll views by employee or by project.
What is the PI Runway Analysis used for?
It projects future balances up to 24 months ahead using beginning balances, commitments, and forecasted personnel/non-personnel costs. It helps PIs see when funds may run out and model hiring or spending scenarios.
Can I accidentally delete real posted expenses or revenue coming from Oracle/Activity Hub?
No. You cannot delete those. Deletion is only possible on forecast entries you create in PIPER. Posted ledger data remains intact; you’re only changing your forecast layer.
How can I stay updated on PIPER developments?
