Hazardous Shipping

The UC San Diego Logistics Outbound Shipping team supports the safe and compliant shipment of hazardous materials, biological substances, dry ice, and infectious substances. Federal and international regulations require specialized training, documentation, packaging, and permitting for many hazardous shipments.

If you plan to ship hazardous materials, review the information below and contact Outbound Shipping before preparing your shipment.

Important Compliance Notice

Failure to comply with federal and international hazardous materials transportation regulations may result in significant civil and criminal penalties, including fines and imprisonment under 49 CFR 107.329–107.333.

Before You Ship

  1. Determine whether your shipment is hazardous.
  2. Complete required training and certification.
  3. Obtain required permits.
  4. Submit a Logistics Request Form.
  5. Prepare your shipment according to Outbound Shipping instructions.
  6. Coordinate pick up with Outbound Shipping.

Important Information

Pickup Timeline

Dry ice and priority hazardous material shipments submitted by noon are typically picked up by 10:00 a.m. the following business day and shipped the same day.
