Medical Insurance for Visiting Scholars
Find out about medical insurance for Visiting Scholars.
All visiting Scholars at UC San Diego are required to have medical insurance coverage for themselves and all of their accompanying dependents through the period of their stay.
US Citizen and Permanent Resident Visiting Scholars
You and your family are required to have medical insurance plans that meet the Affordable Care Act (ACA) guidelines. These plans can be purchased from the Gallagher Marketplace or Healthcare.gov. If you have health insurance that meets the ACA guidelines, you do not need to submit any additional paperwork to UC San Diego, nor do you need to submit a waiver through Gallagher Benefit Services. If you do not have an ACA-compliant plan, we recommend you enroll in one as soon as possible.
International Visiting Scholars
You and your family are required to have medical insurance plans that meet the Department of State guidelines. UC San Diego works with Gallagher Benefit Services to offer affordable plans designed for our international scholars. International Visiting Scholars can choose from two options:
- Purchase a policy from Gallagher Benefit Services for the duration of your time in the US (from the date you enter until the date you leave).
- Enroll in an external policy through another provider or your home country and waive the health insurance offered by Gallagher.
Not enrolling in a plan that meets these guidelines could jeopardize your visa status. UC San Diego frequently conducts reporting with Gallagher Benefit Services to ensure international visiting scholars comply. If one of your family members is a US citizen, they cannot enroll in the plan offered by Gallagher; they must enroll in an ACA-compliant plan.
