Giving from Abroad

UC San Diego welcomes gifts from around the world. International donors can support the university while taking advantage of tax benefits available in their home countries. This page explains how to make a gift from Canada, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, and other European countries through our trusted partners and affiliated charitable organizations. You’ll also find contact information and links for local assistance to ensure your contribution is processed smoothly.

Canada

All gifts to UC San Diego are tax-deductible under Canadian law, as the University of California Regents is a recognized prescribed institution under Canadian Income Tax Regulations. Because Canada Revenue Agency requirements differ from those of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, donors will receive two gift receipts, each including the information needed to meet the respective agencies’ regulations.

NOTE: Gifts from Canada cannot be made to the UC San Diego Foundation as the Foundation is not a prescribed institution under Canadian Income Tax Regulations.

Hong Kong

The University of California Foundation Limited, incorporated on November 23, 2006, is an approved charitable organization under Section 88 of the Hong Kong Inland Revenue Ordinance. Through a Professional Services Agreement with Global Philanthropic International, the Foundation manages all matters related to Hong Kong gifts, including issuing gift receipts, notifying UC San Diego when gifts are made, and ensuring proper deposit of funds. The University of California Foundation Limited collects contributions and forwards them to UC San Diego.

Gift letters should be jointly directed to the University of California Foundation Limited and either the UC San Diego Foundation or the University of California, San Diego.

In addition to a gift letter, a form with gift remittance instructions must be completed and transmitted to Global Philanthropic International.

United Kingdom

British and U.S. taxpayers may make donations in pounds sterling or euros to UC San Diego via the University of California Trust in London - registered British Charity No. 1075405. Additionally, the University of California Trust can collect Gift Aid on your behalf and forward it to UC San Diego.

Donors who have tax liabilities in the UK and the US can give to UC San Diego via the CAF American Donor Fund for dual US/UK taxpayers. Trading as Southampton Row Trust Ltd., the CAF American Donor Fund allows US citizens living in the United Kingdom to receive tax benefits in both countries for their international contributions.

For more information on donations from the UK, contact Executive Director Greta Paa-Kerner.

Other European Countries

If you are a European taxpayer, you may give to UC San Diego via Transnational Giving Europe (TGE), which currently covers 16 countries. Donors may make a gift to the national TGE partner, which will transfer the gift to Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) in London and provide all the national fiscal advantages to the donor. CAF will then forward your gift to UC San Diego with the assistance of the University of California Trust.
