Learn how to prepare for power outage (utility failure).
Ready
Create a disaster plan:
- Create your department Emergency Action Plan.
- Create your department Business Continuity Plan.
- Practice and review your plans.
- Make an emergency supply kit, including food and water.
- Post emergency telephone numbers (including an out-of-state contact).
- Learn first aid and CPR.

Respond
- Turn on your flashlight.
- Turn off all electrical devices to avoid a surge during re-powering. You can leave one task light turned on to determine when service is restored.
- Evacuate to your designated assembly area for headcount and further instructions. Do not take the elevator.
- Take your personal belongings and emergency supply kit when leaving.
- Call to notify Facilities Management, (858) 534-2930.
Recover
- Check with officials before attempting to return.
- Be careful about fires, downed power lines, and other hazards.
- Know how to safely re-start electrical devices when power is restored.
