About Majors in TSS
Why Different Major Codes for the Same Degree?
Many degrees at UCSD have multiple major codes — for example, Master of Public Policy has four codes (GPS-MPP-001, 002, 003, 004). This happens because:
- Different major codes were created during the transition from ISIS to our new system
- Departments may use different major codes to distinguish CIP (Career Education Classification) requirements
What This Means for Course Booking
When you set up course approvals, the system restricts enrollment by major code, not by degree name alone. If your course approval includes GPS-MPP-001, 002, and 003 but not 004, students with code 004 won't be able to register — even though they're also in Master of Public Policy.
These students will need to submit a Triton Enrollment Authorization (TEA) request to bypass the major restriction. This isn't a workaround; it's how the system is designed to work.
How to Avoid TEA Requests
When setting up course approvals, include all major codes for the degree if you want all students in that program to register freely. If you're unsure which codes to include, contact your department chair or the Office of the Registrar.
