Henry Allison is a UC San Diego professor emeritus and former chair of the philosophy department. A renowned scholar of philosophy, Allison is known for his specialization in Kant, Spinoza, German idealism and eighteenth and nineteenth century philosophy. The Allison Chair is a reflection of his commitment to advancing knowledge in the field—and to the university—and will help to ensure the excellence of the philosophy department by recruiting outstanding faculty members. Dan Broida Chair in Elementary Particle Physics
Established by Dan Broida’s son, Joel Broida, the chair supports a faculty member of the department of physics with a research focus in elementary particle physics, or other field of study, to further benefit the department. Dan Broida is known for his leadership at Sigma Chemical Company, a Midwest consultant subsidiary that manufactured saccharin during the war-time rationing of sugar. He successfully redirected Sigma to manufacture specialty biochemicals for scientific research, merging with Aldrich Chemical Company in 1975 to form Sigma-Aldrich. Paul Erdos Chair of Combinatorics formerly known as the Akamai Chair of Internet Mathematics
Dr. Paul Erdos was a Hungarian mathematician. Erdos published more papers than any other mathematician in history, working with hundreds of collaborators. He worked on problems in combinatorics, graph theory, number theory, classical analysis, approximation theory, set theory, and probability theory. He is also known for his "legendarily eccentric" personality. Funded by UC San Diego professor Ronald Graham, the Erdos Chair was established to enhance research surrounding Internet computing and the translation of mathematics to practical real world applications. Graham is one of the world’s best-known mathematicians, computer theorists and technology visionaries. Kurt and Beatrice Shuler Chair in Theoretical Chemical Physics
Established by a planned gift from Dr. Kurt E. Shuler and Mrs. Beatrice Shuler, the chair supports the recruitment and retention of a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Dr. Shuler was recruited to UC San Diego as a founding faculty member of the Division of Physical Sciences in 1967. Stuart I. Brown, M.D. Chair in Ophthalmology in Memory of Donald P. Shiley
The endowed chair was established to honor Dr. Stuart I. Brown and his world-renowned contributions to basic and clinical research of the cornea. He developed a corneal transplantation for babies born blind from corneal opacities. Brown was the first director of the Shiley Eye Center.
