14th Annual Native American Heritage Celebration Kickoff Event | FREE

This virtual event will kick off a month-long schedule of activities honoring Native American Heritage Month. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Evan Adams, a Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority and a trailblazer within the health care system. Dr. Adams is a Coast Salish actor and physician from the Tla’amin First Nation near Powell River, BC, Canada, also known for his role as Thomas Builds-The-Fire in the film Smoke Signals.
In addition, you don’t want to miss our amazing entertainer performing live, Jim Ruel, a comedian, writer, and actor. Jim is an Ojibwe Native American of the Bay Mills Indian Community. He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he spent the first ten years of his career performing in comedy clubs around the Midwest.

Movie Screening: Smoke Signals and LIVE Q&A with Dr. Evan Adams | FREE

Description: Join us to watch the cult classic Smoke Signals. Smoke Signals is a Canadian-American independent film released in 1998, directed and co-produced by Chris Eyre and with a screenplay by Sherman Alexie, based on the short story "This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona" from his book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven (1993). The film features Dr. Evan Adams as Thomas Builds-The-Fire and Adam Beach as Victor Joseph. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with Dr. Evan Adams.

"Tai believes indigenous 'old ways' need to come back in style. The old ways are principles on which many indigenous communities build their social and political narratives. As an antiracism activist and community leader, she uses contemporary and traditional Indigenous storytelling to depict the lens of “old ways” and how it is used to protect the sacred, build strength in the community, and keep nature in balance. "

Description: Trans-indigenous Futures brings together diverse indigenous voices to discuss how to recognize, honor, and apply ancient indigenous knowledge to present-day challenges, and how indigenous and non-indigenous people can move forward collectively with integrity.
Panelists:
Assistant Professor Keolu Fox, a Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) genetic anthropologist and Director of the Indigenous Futures Lab at UC San Diego.
Assistant Professor Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio, a Kānaka Maoli poet, artist, and scholar of Indigenous and Native Hawaiian Politics; Punahele, a Kānaka Maoli Hip Hop artist and educator, and recipient of the 2019 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Hip Hop Album of The Year Award.
Dr. Stan Rodriguez, a member of the Santa Ysabel Band of the Iipay Nation, a Kumeyaay language and culture instructor at Kumeyaay Community College, and builder of traditional tule reed boats.
