Ensure availability of diverse and highly trained workforce to carry out the nation’s biomedical, behavioral research and clinical research agenda
General Information
- Also known as Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSA)
- Awarded to eligible institutions to develop or enhance research training opportunities for individuals
- Provide training funds for predoctoral and/or postdoctoral trainees
- Trainees appointed are not considered university employees
- Stipend levels and training-related expenses are set by NIH annually
Period of Support & Citizenship
Period of Support
- 5 years predoctoral level - individuals who have a baccalaureate degree and are enrolled in a doctoral program leading to either a Ph.D., a comparable research doctoral degree, or a combined clinical degree and Ph.D.,
- 3 years postdoctoral level - individuals who have received a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.C., D.O., D.V.M., O.D., D.P.M., Sc.D., Eng.D., Dr. P.H., D.N.Sc., D.P.T., Pharm.D., N.D., D.S.W., Psy.D.
