Controlled Substances: Training

Learn about training for UCSD researchers who work with controlled substances (CS) for research, teaching, or veterinary care purposes.

Responsibilities

Principal investigators (PI) and supervisors must identify job specific hazards and make sure personnel attend required and recommended safety training appropriate for the work performed.

Print and complete a New Laboratory Worker Checklist (PDF) for every lab worker. File the form with other department safety training records.

Controlled Substances Training

Required for PIs, lab contacts, and authorized personnel working with CS. Training provides the information required for researchers to use controlled substances in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.

This introduction to the secure use of controlled substances covers the Controlled Substance Use Authorization (CSUA) and online CSU application, storage site controls and security, ordering, delivery, and receipt of CS, usage logs and biennial inventory, policies regarding transfer, importing, and exporting CS, disposal, diversion and loss reporting, and illicit activities and repercussions.

Complete either the convenient eCourse format or an instructor-led training.
