Confined Space Training

Learn about confined space training for UC San Diego employees who may encounter a confined space in the course of their work.

Employees who enter confined spaces (as defined by Cal/OSHA) during the course of their job duties must attend confined space training before beginning work.

Confined space

A confined space is a space that has any or all of the following characteristics:

• Limited openings for entry and exit
• Hazardous atmosphere and poor natural ventilation
• Not designed for continuous human occupancy

Possible locations include sewers, tanks, boilers, crawl spaces, acid pits, vaults, storm drains, pipelines, bins, tubs, ducts, and vessels that must be entered for repairs, inspection, or maintenance.

Training

Training is available as needed. For questions or to schedule training, Contact EH&S General Safety, (858) 534-7513. Instruction time is 1 hour.

• Regulating agencies and current regulations
• Identified confined spaces at UCSD
• Hazardous atmospheric conditions
• Pre-entry procedures and equipment operation
• How to use atmospheric monitoring instruments
• Field calibration of monitoring instruments
• Entry logs and permits
• Emergency and rescue procedures
• Responsibilities of supervisors, employees, and Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S)
