Learn about the UCSD Workers' Compensation Program.

California Workers' Compensation (WC) laws require UCSD to provide workers'compensation benefits to employees who are injured or who develop an illness as a direct result oftheir employment. These laws determine who is eligible, when benefits begin, and what benefits toprovide.

See What to Do if a Work-Related Injury or Illness Occurs. For non-work-related injuries, see Benefits.

Eligibility

According to California Labor Code, eligibility for UCSD Workers' Compensation benefits is as follows:

  • All persons serving the university as employees or registered volunteers qualify for workers' compensation coverage through UCSD. Students (other than student employees) and employees of outside agencies do not qualify, even though the claimed injury may have occurred at UCSD.
  • An employer's liability for the provision of workers' compensation benefits exists for any injury arising out of and in the course of the employment.

If you aren't a campus employee or registered volunteer, see Student Health Service.

Coverage

If you have a work-related injury or illness, UCSD's WC pays your medical bills and provides compensation to help replace your lost income until you can return to work. Potential benefits include:

  • Medical care to cure or relieve the effects of the industrial injury
  • Temporary disability payments to help replace lost wages
  • Permanent disability payments to compensate for a permanent disability
  • Supplemental job displacement voucher if you are unable to return to work at UCSD
  • Death benefit payments to dependents
