What is business continuity planning?
Business continuity planning helps an organization continue to provide essential functions or quickly resume essential functions in the event of a disruption. Examples of disruptions may range from earthquakes, wildfires, power outages, hazardous material spills, to gas and water leaks. Continuity planning prepares UC San Diego to continue its mission of teaching, research, public service, and patient care despite adverse events. By proactively gathering critical departmental information, your department will be able to effectively resume business operations in a timely manner.
Continuity plans identify:
- General information about your department.
- Departmental essential functions (those services that must continue).
- Resources needed to perform departmental essential functions (IT needs, facility workspace, personnel, equipment, etc.).
- Action items to lessen the impact of the crisis.

This web-based program, implemented throughout the University of California system, was designed to prepare for rapid resumption of the University's mission following any unexpected crisis. All UC San Diego departmental continuity plans are developed and saved in this easily accessible program.
What does this mean for your department?
UC San Diego departments that are considered critical will be contacted to develop a continuity plan. Having completed continuity plans that details what resources your department needs to perform or resume essential functions will assist the campus Emergency Operations Center in allocating resource support to departments during the response and recovery phase of an incident.
If your department has not been contacted about developing a continuity plan, you may contact the Business Continuity Manager to schedule a meeting to discuss business continuity planning. Contact information is listed below.
