How the Public Buys From Surplus Sales

Learn how the public buys property from UCSD Surplus Sales.

If you want to personally buy surplus items, be sure to read the notice at the bottom of this page and follow the step-by-step instructions below.

1. See the Surplus Sales Web site for available items.

  • Visit UCSD Surplus Sales online to view available items:
    • Divided by category
    • Listed alphabetically by description

    UCSD staff and the general public can purchase surplus items in 2 ways:

    • Out Right Sale: If you see these words next to the item you want to buy, you must purchase the item for that amount, pay at the time of purchase, and remove the item that day.
    • Bid: If you see this word after the item you want to buy, you must submit a confidential, sealed bid. The high bidder is awarded the item and notifed by phone at the end of the month. Items must be removed from Surplus Sales within seven days of notification.
  • When you view item(s) online, note the lot number for each item, so you can easily find the item at the Surplus Sales facility.

Note: You can't purchase Surplus Sales items online through the Surplus Sales Web site.

2. Visit the Surplus Sales facility and view the surplus items you wish to purchase.

  • For detailed directions and a map, see Surplus Sales Location and Directions.
  • All surplus items are tagged with lot numbers for easy identification. View the items at the Surplus Sales facility:
    • Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    • or
    • Schedule an appointment with Steve VanDuine, Sam Cardinal, or James Bates, (858) 695-2660.

Note: All surplus items are used, not new, and sold "as is, where is" with no warranty. All sales are final.

3. If you decide to purchase an item by Out Right Sale, follow these steps.

  • Pay for the item in one of these ways:
    • Cash
    • Credit/ debit card
    • Personal Checks (business checks will no longer be accepted)

    California sales tax is applied unless you provide a reseller’s permit.

  • Make arrangements to remove the item(s) you purchase at the time of payment.

4. If you plan to purchase an item by Bid, follow these steps.

  1. Download a Surplus Sales Bid Sheet (PDF). Print out and complete the form.
    • If you are unsure how to complete the form, see How to Submit a Surplus Sales Bid Sheet.
  2. Send the Surplus Sales Bid Sheet to Surplus Sales:
    • 7835 Trade St., Suite 100
      San Diego, CA 92121
    • Mail Code 0046
    • FAX (858) 578-9344

      Important: Bids must be received by the last Wednesday of the month by 2 p.m. PST.

    • If your bid is accepted, you will be notified by telephone within 48 hours after the close of the bid deadline.
    • Pay for the item in one of these ways:
      • Cash
      • Credit/ debit card
      • Personal Checks (business checks will no longer be accepted)

        California sales tax is applied unless you provide a reseller’s permit.

    • You must remove your bid items within seven days of notification:
      • Monday – Wednesday, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Notice: UCSD employees may buy items from Surplus Sales for personal use. Exceptions: Employees or near relatives of Material Support Services; and UCSD employees or near relatives when the property originates from the employee's department. A "near relative” includes a spouse, mother, father, child, or sibling, and step-relatives or in-laws in the same relationships.
