Occupied in 1931, Ritter Hall is one of the original buildings of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The facility is a five story building with 26,948 square feet of assignable area, providing space for the Institution’s comprehensive study of the ocean, earth and atmosphere. The building is named in honor of the first director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dr. William E. Ritter, and the visionary leadership, courage and determination he brought to Scripps. One of the early prominent marine invertebrate biologists, Ritter envisioned an integrative approach to oceanography, a vision that has helped to establish Scripps as the premier oceanographic institution on the West Coast.
