About Powell Structural Systems Lab Expansion

Supported by the Charles Lee Powell Foundation, the Powell Structural Research Laboratories opened in August 1994 and is a world-renowned facility for its research and innovations in earthquake safety. The laboratory has an assignable space of 1,466 square feet and is located in Warren College. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake caused extensive damage to steel frame buildings, the Powell Labs led the way in testing methods of retrofitting existing steel structures as well as the construction of new steel structures. Today the research conducted at the Powell Labs continues to capture the innovative and pioneering spirit of the self-taught engineer Charles Lee Powell, for which it is named.
