About Nierenberg Hall
Originally known as the Physical Oceanography and Space Science Building, Nierenberg Hall was renamed to honor William A. Nierenberg (1919-2000), director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1965-1986. Nierenberg was well-known for his work in low-energy nuclear physics and was a leading expert in several fields of underwater research and warfare. He had a long record of national and international service, including as a consultant to the National Security Agency, the Institute for Naval Analyses and the Department of Defense. This four-story building houses the Physical Oceanography Research Division, the Climate Research Division, and the California Space Institute.
