About IGPP - Munk Library

Located at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Walter and Judith Munk Laboratory for Geophysics is one of the buildings belonging to the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP). The IGPP is a University of California system-wide research center, internationally recognized for its commitment to advancing scientific understanding of the structure, origin and evolution of the solar system and its planets. The Munk facility has four floors and an assignable area of 30,903 square feet to accommodate the need for research space at IGPP. First occupied in 1963, the facility was renamed in 1993 to honor Walter Munk for his scientific accomplishments and dedicated service to the university. A Ph.D. graduate of Scripps, Munk established the IGPP branch located on the La Jolla campus and served as its director. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field of oceanography, most recently being the Crafoord Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 2010. The Munk Laboratory's namesakes, Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist Walter Munk, and his wife, architect Judith Horton Munk, worked with Lloyd Ruocco, one of San Diego's most renowned architects, in designing this redwood structure.
