About Geisel Library

Located in the university's center, the Geisel Library was designed by architect William Pereira, renowned for his futuristic designs, and was occupied in August 1970. In 1995, the building was named for Audrey and Theodor Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss), for their generous contributions to the libraries and improving literacy. In 2008 the Geisel building, with its resemblance to a spaceship, was named one of the 25 most modern libraries in the world for its ‘sleek architecture and the latest technology.’ The UC San Diego libraries continue to be ranked among the country’s top academic research libraries. Geisel Library is currently undergoing renovations, which were launched in 2015, that have successfully improved the student spaces on the 2nd and 8th floors and will continue to improve the high volume spaces in the library over the next few academic years.
