About Robert and Natalie Englekirk Structural Engineering Center
The Englekirk Center is an expansion of the Powell Structural Research Laboratories and is located at a field station eight miles east of the UC San Diego campus at Camp Elliott. The Englekirk Center has three floors and 2,293 square feet of assignable area. Occupied in April of 2004, the center houses the world’s first outdoor shake table, the largest soil-structure interaction facility and a blast simulator. The center was named in honor of Robert and Natalie Englekirk who provided a $1.5 million gift for fellowships and scholarships to structural engineering students at the Jacobs School of Engineering. Robert Englekirk is the founder of the Englekirk Companies, noted for its structural designs of facilities including San Diego’s Horton Plaza shopping center and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. He is now an adjunct professor of structural engineering at UC San Diego and serves on the Jacobs School Dean’s Council of Advisors.
