About Eckart Building

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography Library is housed in the three-story Eckart Building, named for Carl Henry Eckart (1902-1973), director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1948-1950. The library is considered the finest oceanographic library in the world. It houses an enormous collection of marine-related literature and reference materials, and is the home of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives, which include the papers of many distinguished oceanographers, as well as historical photos and documents pertaining to Scripps' history.
