About Birch Aquarium at Scripps
Located atop a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is Stephen Birch Aquarium, funded by the Stephen and Mary Birch Foundation. The aquarium was occupied in September of 1992 with the mission of providing ocean science education, interpreting Scripps research, and promoting conservation. Birch Aquarium was the silver winner in museum design for its exhibit Feeling the Heat: The Climate Challenge, in the 2007 Event Design Awards and was voted the Best Museum in San Diego 4 years in a row from 2011 to 2014. The aquarium has grown to house 5 large main exhibits, including the Hall of Fishes, featuring more than 60 fish and invertebrate tanks; ElasmoBeach, a sandy bottomed tank based on the La Jolla sea floor; Tide-Pool Plaza, which features three living tide pools; Boundless Energy, a playground meant to celebrate natural power sources; and There's Something About Seahorses, a testament to Birch Aquarium's place as a world leader in seahorse propagation.
