Bates Hall

About named building

Bates Hall houses first-year Warren students and provides them with convenient and picturesque housing as part of the greater Warren residential community. Serving as one of the main residential complexes in Warren College, Bates Hall is named after Daisy Bates, former co-publisher of the Arkansas State Press and one of the central figures of the Supreme Court case Bates v. City of Little Rock. The Supreme Court's ruling on this case insured that the First Amendment protected organization's right to refuse to disclose their membership lists. This ruling is considered one of the most impactful rulings of the "Warren Court" under Chief Justice Earl Warren which helped ensure the expansions of the right of privacy under the First Amendment.
