Getting Started with Two-Step Login: Register Devices

Follow these steps to register your devices to use with two-step login.

To use two-step login, you'll need to register devices you'll have access to when logging in, including your cellphone, landline or token.

This page discusses registering a device for the first time. If you've already done that and want to add more devices, here are the instructions

You are strongly recommended to register multiple devices because:

  1. There may come a time when your primary device is not available
  2. To add a device, you'll need to first login in using a registered device. For example, if you've only registered your cellphone, and it's not available, you won't be able to register a second device without help from the Service Desk.

Using push notifications via the free Duo smartphone app results in the most seamless user experience during two-step login. Follow the instructions below to both install the app and register a device. If you don't need app installation instructions, link directly to the device registration instructions.

Registering other devices, like a landline phone, follows a similar process.

If you're ready, you may go straight to the registration portal (https://duo-registration.ucsd.edu); otherwise, read below for detailed instructions.

Install Duo App on a Mobile Phone

Before starting the process to register a mobile device to use two-step login, it's a good idea to install and open up the app. The process for iOS is documented below, and is similar for Android.

Before starting, note that for Apple you'll need to be running iOS 10.0 or greater, and for Android, you'll need to be on Android 6.0 or greater.

  1. Find the Duo Mobile app. Note that other apps may appear, so be sure you're installing Duo Mobile with the green logo.
  2. When you open the app, you'll probably want to allow Duo to send notifications. This will lead to the most seamless experience using two-step login. Otherwise, each time you log in you'll have to open the app to approve.

  3. Get ready to add your account in the Duo app. You can either tap "ADD ACCOUNT" or tap the plus symbol in the upper right corner.
  4. The Duo app will need to access your camera to complete the registration process (see below). Allow the access, then put the phone down momentarily to continue to the device registration interface.
