Configure WIndows to use UCSD-Protected Wireless Service


Overview


Follow these steps to set up your Windows computer to use the WPA2-E encrypted campus wireless at UC San Diego, UCSD-PROTECTED.

Steps to Take


Windows 10

  1. Click on the Wireless Network Connection icon on the bottom right of your screen near the system clock.
  2. Click on the UCSD-PROTECTED network.
  3. Ensure the "Connect automatically" box is checked and click Connect.
  4. Enter your Active Directory username and password.

Windows 8

Go to Settings

  1. Swipe from the right side of your tablet/phone
    • For desktop and laptop machines, move your mouse pointer to the upper righthand corner of your screen
  2. Click on the settings (wheel Icon)
  3. Click on the Available Icon
  4. Click on UCSD-PROTECTED
  5. Click Connect
  6. Enter your AD (Active Directory) username and password
  7. Click OK
  8. Click Connect

Windows 7

  1. Click on the Wireless Network Connection icon on the bottom right of your screen near the system clock.
  2. Click on the UCSD-PROTECTED network.
  3. Ensure the "Connect automatically" box is checked and click Connect.
  4. If a "Windows Security Alert" window opens, please click the Connect button again.
  5. Enter your Active Directory username and password.

Windows 7 Phone

  1. Configure your Wi-Fi.
    1. Select Settings.
    2. Select Wi-Fi Settings.
    3. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on with the use of the virtual sliding switch
  2. Select the encrypted wireless service.
    1. Select UCSD-PROTECTED.
      If UCSD-PROTECTED isn’t on the list, you may need to move to another area with better connectivity.
  3. Configure UCSD-PROTECTED option.
    1. Username field: Enter your Active Directory username.
    2. Password field: Enter your Active Directory password.
    3. Select Done.
    4. Select Connect.
  4. Verify your connection. To verify you have a proper IP address once you are connected
    1. Select Settings.
    2. Select Wi-Fi.
    3. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on with the use of the virtual sliding switch
    4. Select UCSD-PROTECTED
    5. IP address field will have a 128.xxx.xxx.xxx address

Third-Party Vendor Software

  1. Find the third-party software on your PC.
    1. Click the Start menu, and navigate to All Programs.
    2. Locate the software for your wireless card (the name will probably contain the word "wireless") and click to open.
      Note: Your screens for configuring properties for WPA2-E will vary depending on the software, but use similar terms and field names for the settings.
  2. Configure wireless properties. Select the following settings:
    1. General settings:
      • Wireless network name (SSID): UCSD-Protected
    2. Security settings:
      • Network Authentication: WPA2 Enterprise
      • Data Encryption: AES
      • Select Enable 802.1x
      • Authentication (EAP) type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
      • EAP-MSCHAP v2 properties:
        • User credentials (possible choices):
          • Prompt each time I connect, or
          • Uncheck "Automatically use my Windows login name and password"
        • Username: Enter your Active Directory username
        • Password: Enter your Active Directory password
        • Domain: Leave blank
      • PEAP server properties:
        • Allow Intermediate Certificates: Leave blank
    3. Follow your software instructions to initiate wireless connections.
