Configuring iPhone/iPad 6.x and above to Access the UCSD Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Follow these steps to connect your iPhone to the UCSD virtual private network (VPN), which lets you create protected connections to UCSD's network from remote locations.

Before you begin, you must have:

  • An iPhone/iPad with version 10.x firmware or later installed (Option 1)
  • An iPhone/iPad with version 6.x firmware or later installed (Option 2)
  • Your UCSD Active Directory username and password
    • Your network username is usually the first part of your UCSD e-mail address before the @ symbol and is only 8 characters in length. If you forget your password, see Getting or Changing UCSD Passwords.

Option 1: iPhone/iPad App (Preferred)

Step 1: Download Cisco AnyConnect app from the App Store

  1. In the App Store, search "Cisco AnyConnect" and download the Cisco AnyConnect client.

Step 2: Add a VPN Connection

  1. Click on "Connections."

  2. Click "Add VPN Connection..."

  3. Fill out the requested information:
    1. Description: UCSD VPN
    2. Server Address: vpn.ucsd.edu
  4. Click "Save"

  5. When prompted if you would like to "Add VPN Configurations", click "Allow."

Step 3: Connect to the VPN

  1. On the main page, toggle the AnyConnect VPN button to the ON position

  2. Select your desired connection profile from the Group drop-down menu:
    • 2-Step Secured options – Need to be used if you are enrolled in Duo Two-Step authentication
    • allthruucsd – Route all traffic through the UCSD VPN.
      • Use allthruucsd when accessing Library resources and the CMS.
    • split – Route only campus traffic through the UCSD VPN. All other traffic goes through your normal Internet provider.

  3. Enter your AD username and password. (See Two-Step Login: VPN for further options.)
  4. Click "Connect"

Step 4: Disconnect VPN

  1. To disconnect the session, toggle the AnyConnect VPN button to the OFF position

Option 2: Download the VPN configuration profile

Step 1: Download iPhone/iPad VPN configuration profile

  1. Using your iPhone/iPad, open Safari and download one of the following VPN configuration profiles.
    1. For accounts that require two-step login, use this VPN configuration profile.
    2. For accounts that do not yet require two-step login, use this VPN configuration profile.
  2. Log in using Single Sign-On with one of the 3 methods under the Sign on with: pull-down menu.

  3. If prompted to open Settings, click Allow.

Step 2: Install the profile

  1. Select Install.
  2. Select Install Now on the following screen.
  3. If prompted, enter your iPhone/iPad security code (i.e., passcode).

Step 3: Create VPN profile username and password

  1. Enter your Active Directory username/password for the VPN profile.
  2. Enter profile username, click Next.
  3. Enter profile password, click Next.
  4. Select Done.

Step 4: Connect to the VPN

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Slide the VPN switch to the ON position

Step 5: Enter VPN authentication

  1. Enter your Active Directory username and password.

  2. WARNING: If you see the following error, you have the wrong VPN configuration profile installed. Please go back to Step 1, download the profile for accounts that require two-step login, and then follow all steps again.

Step 6: Disconnect VPN

  1. Select Settings.
  2. Slide the VPN switch to the OFF position.
