Zoom: Join a Meeting by Phone

Learn how to join a meeting on Zoom using your phone.

Teleconferencing use cases

You can join a Zoom meeting via teleconferencing/ audio conferencing using a traditional telephone. This is useful in occasions where:

  • you do not have a microphone or speaker on your computer,
  • you do not have a smartphone (iOS or Android) while on the road, or
  • you could not connect to a network for video and VoIP/ computer audio. 

You have two options for joining a zoom meeting by teleconferencing:

  1. Join by computer (for video) and telephone (for audio)
  2. Join by telephone only

Option 1: Join by computer (for video) and telephone (for audio)

  1. Join a Zoom meeting
  2. Once you are in the meeting, select the Join Audio in the menu barJoin audio screen shot
  3. Follow instructions on the dialog box to Dial In

  4. Enter #Participant ID#. Otherwise you may hear audio feedback or echo in the meeting.

Option 2: Join by telephone only

  1. Dial a local number. See a list of dial-in numbers.
    For US calls: (408) 638-0968  -or-  (646) 558-8656
  2. You will be prompted to enter the meeting ID - the nine (9) or ten (10) digit ID provided to you by the host
  3. You will be prompted to enter your unique participant ID - Press # to skip
    Note: If you decided to Join via telephone after Joining via computer:
    1. Select Audio Options

    2. Click Leave Computer Audio.

    3. Then enter #Participant ID#. Otherwise you may hear audio feedback or echo in the meeting.

Teleconference only meetings

  1. Schedule or update your scheduled meeting with 'enable join before host' selected.

Phone commands available for meeting participants

The following commands can be entered via DTMF tones using your phone's dialpad while in a Zoom Meeting:

  • Star (*) 6 - Toggle mute/ un-mute
  • Star (*) 9 - Toggle raise/ lower hand

International calls and Zoom dial-in numbers

If you want to join a Zoom meeting originating in another country, you can do so using your normal client or plug-in to avoid international call charges.

If you need to connect by phone, you have two options to connect to an international meeting by phone:

  1. Use the Zoom number of the country you are in, if available, or
  2. Use the Zoom number of the nearest international calling country with the lowest per minute rates.

Find an international Zoom number

Find the international Zoom number for the country hosting the meeting in one of two ways:
  1. If you are connecting only by phone, use the list of international Zoom numbers.
    Note: If a number is not listed or has asterisks (***) in place of some of the numbers, it means that number is not available on the account that you're currently using. 
  2. If you are using the Windows desktop client, use the flag menu and down arrow to select the appropriate country.

Connect by phone

  1. Dial one of the numbers provided.
    Note: Make sure you use the proper country code for international calls. See how to dial internationally.
  2. Follow the prompt to enter your meeting ID - the nine (9) or ten (10) digit ID provided to you by the host, followed by #
  3. Follow the prompt to enter your unique participant ID. This only applies if you have joined on the computer or mobile device or are a panelist in a webinar. Press # to skip.

Switching between phone and computer audio

If you join by computer or mobile device later, you can enter the Participant ID to bind your phone and device session together and show your video when you speak on the phone.

To bind your phone and device session, enter #Participant ID# on your phone while in the device session.

Changing from computer audio to phone audio

If you joined computer audio automatically and need to join by phone you can leave the computer audio and join by phone:

  1. Click the arrow next to Mute/Unmute on the Zoom taskbar.
  2. Click Leave Computer Audio.
  3. Click Phone Call and follow the prompt to dial in.

Additional information

  • If you would like the meeting to last for unlimited duration you will have to schedule from a Pro account.
  • If you have scheduled the meeting from a basic account the meeting will timeout after forty-minutes with a thirty minute warning notification.
  • If you do not use a computer or app to control the meeting, you will not have host controls such as recording, mute all/ individual functionality.
  • The number of phones that can connect to a Zoom Meeting or Webinar is determined by account type and add-on assigned to the user account
