Psi for Windows

Instructions for using Psi for Windows for use with chat.ucsd.edu

1. Download Psi for Windows

Psi is a free chat client available for download on Windows. Download and install the client on your computer.

2. Configure your account

  1. Run Psi and you will receive the following message. Select "Use existing account."

  2. In the Account tab, enter [username]@chat.ucsd.edu under "XMPP Address". Enter your Active Directory password.
    1. You can choose to have Psi automatically connect on startup or reconnect if disconnected or waking from sleep.
    2. Leave "Log message history" unchecked. Chat.ucsd.edu does not log conversations.

  3. In the Connection tab, enter the following settings:
      1. Check Send "keep-alive" packets (to prevent timeouts)
      2. Check Manually Specify Server Host/Port:
        1. Host: chat.ucsd.edu
        2. Port: 5223
      3. Encrypt connection: Legacy SSL
      4. Allow plaintext authentication: Over encrypted connection

  4. Save your settings once you finish.

3. Add friends

  1. To add a friend, click on the Psi icon or General, then select Add a Contact

  2. The Add Contact Dialog will appear.

  3. In this dialog, enter the XMPP address of your friend. You can nickname your friend anything you like. You can also add them to any Groups you might have in your contact list.
  4. Click Add and they will appear in your contact list.
